Cost Index

Cost Index

When doing your FMC pre-flight, do you ever wonder what to input as the Cost Index (CI)? This is typically a dimensionless value between 1-199 or maybe even 1-999. Lower values (less than 50) usually result in a lower performance "economy" flight which higher values are used for a faster flight and high fuel consumption. The value can even be varied in-flight. Airlines will normally choose some SOP (Standard Operating Producure) values for pilots to use, and if you join a VA (Virtual Airline) their policies or dispatches will provide you with the cost index you should use (and note that your flight data is often recorded via a provided ACARS guage and scored so youll want to follow procedures).

Even if youre not with a VA but flying your favorite airline livery you might be able to find the standard CI values in this AVSIM thread: http://forum.avsim.net/topic/336375-cost-index-database/. The thread also includes links to a helpful guide on using CI: http://www.boeing.com/commercial/aeromagazine/articles/qtr_2_07/AERO_Q207_article5.pdf.
